French for children

I teach French to children the way I believe a child learns a language most easily — in an encouraging, safe and relaxed setting. The language arrives along the way, because the child listens and speaks rather than studies.

Children learning French through play with illustrated cards

Three reasons this works

01

I teach every lesson myself, from first to last

Nenah Iza Zeilhofer, certified teacher of French. 36 years and a single language. Your child does not change teachers and does not start over each time.

02

Three children at most

Groups run online, in a group of three at most. Every child gets to speak in every lesson. Anyone who wants more attention works in a pair or one to one.

03

I prepare the material myself

Stories, songs and exercises tested on generations of children. Your child takes them home too, so you can see what is going on.

The material is always something a child can truly follow

The same approach, different content. Below is how we work at each age; what your child will be able to say is in the path section.

ages 4–5

Preschoolers

Stories, songs, movement and learning games. Colouring, drawing, first letters and numbers.
ages 6–8

Early primary

First sentences and listening with understanding, plus the beginnings of reading. All through story and play.
ages 9–11

Middle primary

Reading short texts and writing. Grammar comes when the child needs it, not before.
ages 12–14

Upper primary

Vocabulary for everyday topics, confidence in speaking and systematic preparation for the first international exam.

We have a dedicated page for this goal: DELF / DALF prep

CEFR levels from A1 to C2

What your child will be able to say

The path is the same at every age. A five-year-old and a twelve-year-old both start at A1 — the material and the pace differ, not the path. The levels are international, defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) — the same ones schools and exam centres recognise.

Below is not theory but the sentences your child will actually be able to say at each level.

A1

»Je m’appelle Ana. J’ai sept ans et j’habite à Ljubljana.«

Introduces themselves, says how old they are and where they live.

A2

»Hier, on est allés au parc et j’ai joué avec mon frère.«

Says what happened yesterday. Ready for DELF Prim.

B1

»Je pense que ce film est intéressant parce qu’il parle d’amitié.«

Gives an opinion and can back it up.

B2

»Si j’avais plus de temps, je lirais ce livre en français.«

Speaks freely, including about things that are not the case.

Nenah Iza is my French teacher and I have been learning with her since I was 4. Nenah Iza is an exceptional teacher, not only because of her ability and her teaching of French, but also because of her compassion and kindness. She gives her utmost for every one of her students and advises us on solving our problems. I have learned an enormous amount with her and I am completely certain that every one of her students would say the same, because for each of us she adapts the lessons and attends to our learning difficulties, dyslexia for example. Her lessons are really fun and creative, because she prepares really well for every single one. In my lessons we often learned in an entertaining way, we cooked together and that is how I learned the names of kitchen utensils and food; we built up vocabulary and grammatical structures with cards and role play: a shop, a restaurant … We also often watch some video clips so that I can remember and picture her explanation more easily. It was never a problem for her to explain something one more time. She does a great deal for her students and after every one of her lessons you feel like a champion of French. We all know that French is one of the hardest languages in the world, but with a teacher like Nenah Iza learning is easier and more fun, even though it is hard. In time she became not only my teacher but also my friend and my role model for life, school and work, because she does all of it with joy! It is true, I cannot praise her enough and I really do recommend her.

What people ask me most

With a small group, even more so than in a classroom: your child has the material on screen and I see each one individually. It also saves the drive across town.

No. Beginner groups are meant for exactly that — even the first international diploma is within reach for a child with no prior knowledge.

We talk before enrolment and I suggest the format that suits them. If it turns out during the year that their own pace would serve them better, we switch to one-to-one lessons.

Enrolment runs until 8 October 2026 and lessons start on 15 October 2026. One-to-one lessons can start at any time.
